AWARDS & MILESTONES

  • 1954 — Initiated first sea turtle research and conservation effort in Southwest Florida, on Naples beach.


  • 1956-1958 — Conducted capture/tagging and life history survey of 1,500+ American alligators in the Big Cypress Basin of Collier County, Florida.


  • 1959-1968 — Continued alligator studies on Sanibel Island.  500+ animals captured and tagged.  Managed nuisance alligator program on Sanibel Island during this period.


  • 1959 — Started long-term sea turtle study on Sanibel Island, Florida.


  • 1963 — Launched a loggerhead turtle tagging program on Sanibel Island.


  • 1963-1966 — Served on the American Alligator Council.


  • 1968 — Appointed to the Alligator Protection Committee of the Florida Audubon Society.


  • 1968 — Founded Caretta Research, Inc., a tax-exempt foundation, implemented to conduct and fund sea turtle studies in Florida.


  • 1969 — Published preliminary report, The Marine Turtles of Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida.


  • 1972 — Received Florida Governor's Conservation Award pin for our efforts in loggerhead turtle conservation from Florida Governor, Claude Kirk. 


  • 1973 — Granted the first Marine Turtle Permit issued in Florida, TP-001.


  • 1973 — Expanded the Caretta Research program to 14 units on the Gulf Coast and one on the East Coast of Florida.


  • 1974 — Elected to first Sanibel City Council and served two terms, 1974-80.


  • 1975 — Wrote an ordinance which prohibited the feeding of American alligators within the city limits of Sanibel.  This became a model that eventually had state-wide overtones when this regulation became part of Florida's wildlife code.


  • 1977 — Received Certificate of Service for serving as the first President and Project Director of Caretta Research, Inc.


  • 1978  — Attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia, and received commission as a Refuge Law Enforcement Officer.
  • 1978 - 1983 — Served as the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Field Response Coordinator for wildlife recovery and rehabilitation during pollution events for lower Florida Gulf Coast.
  • 1979 — Represented the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the International Symposium on Sea Turtle Conservation at the U. S. State Department in Washington, D.C.
  • 1983 — Represented the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the Western Atlantic Sea Turtle Symposium in San Jose, Costa Rica.
  • 1988 — Proclamation issued by the Sanibel City Council in recognition of our accomplishments in the field of loggerhead turtle research and conservation.


  • 1990 — Received Special Achievement Award and Certificate of Service from U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service upon retirement after an exemplary 32-year career with that agency as a wildlife technician/refuge officer.


  • 1990 — Published the book, The Loggerhead Turtle in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.


  • 1991 — Founded the Gulf Coast Regional Sea Turtle Association.


  • 1991 —  Caretta Research, Inc. administratively dissolved and the Sanibel and Captiva Islands sea turtle program  transferred to the auspices of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation.


  • 1998 — Published Sanybel Light: An Historical Autobiography chronicling a life driven by sea turtles.


  • 2000 — Received a Certificate of Appreciation for  support of the Florida Marine Turtle Protection Program, along with other groups and individuals.


  • 2004 — Published The Calusan, a historical novel that in part  features harvesting of sea turtles and their eggs by aboriginal Floridians.


  • 2005 — Published an online history of Everglades Wonder Gardens.  Locate and click the hyperlink below.


  • 2006 — Appointed Alligator Complaint Evaluator, to assess alligator threats, by the Eagle Ridge Lakes Condominium Association.


  • 2007  — Created the Southwest Florida Natural History Newsletter as a forum to discuss marine and wildlife issues in the region.  Locate and click the hyperlink below.


  • 2010 — Wrote Everglades Wildlife Barons: The Legendary Piper Brothers and Their Wonder Gardens.  Published by Ralph Curtis Publishing, May 2010.
